Mohali: India held their nerves in a close finish to win the third one-day international against England by 5 wickets and thereby take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
After putting up a healthy 298 on the board, England bowlers failed to keep a lid on the scoring. And though the visitors came back with some quick wickets towards the end of Indian innings, MS Dhoni (35 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (26 not out) had the cool head to take India home in the last over.
Earlier, half centuries by Ajinkaya Rahane, (91) who fell nine runs short of his century, and Gautam Gambhir, who scored 59, put India on course to register a series-winning victory.
India looked in control at 190/1 in the 34th over but England didn’t lose hope and got some quick wickets after a rash shot brought Gambhir’s innings to an end.
Earlier, for England, Jonathan Trott (98) was the top-scorer but was left stranded two runs short of his century. Meanwhile, quick half century by Kevin Pietersen (64) and a 70-run cameo by Samit Patel propelled England to 298
