DOOKUDU 3 MILLION $ IN US

Overseas market for Telugu movies especially US market was dormant until the release of Superstar Mahesh Babu’s Dookudu. Though films like Magadheera and Happy Days expanded the market in US, Dookudu’s success was huge. Generating $ 1 million for a Telugu film itself is a huge feat, which Dookudu achieved by its first week.

At the end of the fourth week, Dookudu in US posted an astronomic al figure o f $2.25 million making it highest ever grosser in Telugu. It broke Magadheera’s record of $ 1.28 million (lifetime business of the movie in USA) by huge margin.

What is more, Dookudu is now inching towards the $ 3 million figure . If it really does, the movie will land in the exclusive club of Indian movies that collected more than $ 3 million in USA. So far only four Indian movies could achieve this in North America.

Indian films that collected more than $ 3 million in North America are – 3 Idiots (6.54), My Name Is Khan (4.02), Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (3.29), Om Shanti Om (3.60).

A Telugu film generating such huge revenue is never heard of. It augurs well for the Telugu film industry and hope forthcoming movies capitalize this trend set by Dookudu.

Mahesh Babu: ‘Dookudu’ Is A Miracle In Indian Film Industry

Prince Mahesh Babu is riding high with the success of his latest offering ‘Dookudu’ and the film has received the second highest opening in the US after Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’. Recently, Mahesh was sharing his thoughts and here are few excerpts

Stuck with ‘Pokiri’:
Mahesh mentioned that his film ‘Pokiri’ was remade two years ago with Salman Khan and it became a massive hit. But he got stuck to that image and that’s why his later movies didn’t click. So, he decided to take an year off and made his comeback with ‘Dookudu’. He is happy with the response as well.

Down-to-earth nature:
Despite his stardom, Mahesh has been quite down to earth. He maintains that this is due to his ‘regular’ upbringing from his father superstar Krishna. He recalled how they used to travel in autos and kept life as normal as possible. Mahesh admitted that he lost out on one year of school due to his stint as a child artist. His father got worried and advised him to act only when he is older. So Mahesh went back to school.

Publicity & learning:
Mahesh reportedly confessed that in the start, the attention he got from people stressed him out and it took time for him to get used to it and feel relaxed. He adds that the place is amazing as there is opportunity to meet so many people and learn many things. The prince states that he is growing as a human being everyday.

Bollywood:
Mahesh makes it clear that it will take two years for him to step into Bollywood even if he wants it because of his ongoing projects. Currently, he is shooting for ‘The Businessman’ in Mumbai. He added that the response to ‘Dookudu’ is actually a miracle and this has given him more responsibilities. Apparently, the director is keen on doing the Hindi version with Mahesh but the price prefers to focus only on south for now.

Bollywood connection:
Mahesh mentioned that if at all he made his debut in Bollywood, it would be with a proper role and not through some side role. His connection to the circuit is his wife actress Namrata Shirodkar.

Marriage and popularity:
Mahesh stated that his marriage with Namrata didn’t affect his popularity and instead, it made him even more famous. He beamed with pride that after the birth of his son Gautham, his whole perspective changed. The prince beams with pride and mentions that once a person becomes a dad, he becomes a man.

Is there anything that Dookudu is leaving untouched? Besides becoming the biggest hit in the history of Telugu cinema and the highest BO grosser in the US market, and leaving its imprint in cosmopolitan cities like Chennai and Mumbai, Mahesh Babu’s film has been talked about in a report in the popular LA-based daily, Los Angeles Times. The film’s remarkable feat of becoming the biggest money-earner at the box office, has given the film this prestigious recognition.

The headline reads like this: ‘Dookudu,’ the biggest hit you’ve never heard of. The report talks about the film’s genre and goes about talking about its success back home as well its unprecedented overseas business. It quotes Harish Sajja, the film’s LA distributor as saying that Dookudu will “stay in theaters through the fall.”

It quotes the stunning figure of $82,000 that the movie took in at a multiplex in Fairfax Country, Va.

With Dookudu making news and waves each passing day, it is only a matter of time before it gets a whopping price for its remake rights in Hindi and Tamil. Much like Pokiri, it may see a successful run in both the languages. Going by the craze for Telugu scripts in Bollywood, however, it might be adapted in Hindi first.
